Blanchard Elementary

RE:  20/20 Vision Plan

1.    At the meeting yesterday in Blanchard some of the key points to remember are:
·         When emailing board members, use “SAVE BLANCHARD ELEMENTARY” as your subject line as a lot of our emails will go unopened.  But our sentiment can be conveyed with this simple subject line message.
·         DO NOT speak negatively about:  other schools (PROMOTE YOUR SCHOOL!), the school board members, or the superintendent
·         The school board members DID NOT come up with this plan; they were presented with this plan and now are in the position of being forced to vote YES, NO, or YES BUT PHASE IN OVER TIME.
·         It has not been widely reported, but Mooringsport & Timmons are slotted to close in 2013-2014.
2.    The online petition is great BUT I need all 1005+ (to date) people to write a personal letter to the 12 members of the Executive Committee of the Caddo Parish School Board as well!  I have provided all their contact info at bottom of this blog entry:  HOME, OFFICE & EMAIL addresses.  As Laurie Bigelow said recently on FB, "Emails are great, but 1005+ letters in their mailbox is very hard to ignore!! Board members must hear a resounding NO from our community! ".
3.    I only have 243 FB friends so I need EVERYONE to PLEASE REPOST THIS TO YOUR STATUS!!!  (repost the petition, my blog, your thoughts, just SOMETHING!!!! PLEASE!)
4.    PLEASE SIGN ONLINE PETITION:

Here are some of my personal thoughts on the issue at hand:
As I understand it, the issue at hand is a budget issue.  The board is under this assumption that there is an abundance of space at DBMS.  But unfortunately, just because you have space does not mean that you can just place 500+ children in an empty space and voila, problem solved!
·         Where has all the money from the BOATS gone over the last 15 years that was PROMISED to better our educational system?
·         Why did the 20/20 Vision Community present a “10 year plan” with NO mention of immediate school closure several months ago?  Why was community involvement requested if we were not presented with ACCURATE information by which to respond?
·         How can DBMS accommodate 525+ students with less than 5 months to make required renovations/additions?
·         How will the elementary children (pre-K thru 5th) be separated from the middle school children (6th – 8th)?
·         How is the consolidation to be accomplished? Temporary buildings (T-buildings)?  Overcrowded classrooms?  Partitions in gyms?
o   Will T buildings be ready for classroom instruction by August 2011 if ordered March 2011?
o   If DBMS partitions the gymnasium and uses it for classrooms, where will the students take physical education?  Please take note of extreme temperatures during Louisiana spring & summer months, so assuming using “outdoors” as an option may not work.
o   How will the merge affect the classroom census for both our students and DBMS students if the middle school has to combine classes to share classroom space?  It was noted this week that only 11 classrooms are readily available at DBMS while 33 are needed for the transition.
o   Are the restroom facilities accommodating to 4 year olds and 500+ extra students each day?
o   Is the cafeteria able to accommodate 4 year olds and 500+ extra students each day?
o   Is there enough parking for the teachers/staff for 500+ students?
·         When and where will playground equipment be placed for recess time for elementary students (pre-K thru 5th)?
·         Why did tax payers invest hundreds of thousands of dollars to install central air and heating less than a year ago for a school that will close August 2011?
·         Why a new roof was installed March 6, 2011 that is proposed to close August 2011 and never reopen?  I personally saw this roof being installed on Sunday (I assume overtime was being paid).
·         With Blanchard being the fastest growing community in Caddo Parish (41.7% increase since the 2000 census), why was Blanchard Elementary School chosen to consolidate?  If it is growing and you consolidate these schools, how long do you think it will be before it is at full capacity and over? The addition of I-49 North is only going to add to this rapid growth!  We are not a low performing school; in fact our scores continually show improvement!

I also see that Herndon Magnet School is proposed for consolidation.  Why take the ONLY magnet school north of town and combine it with 4 other schools, and make it k-12; along with an alternativew school?  You would seriously consider taking a very high performing magnet school and combining it with an alternative school?  You are going to force parents to find other alternatives for educating their children, whether that be to send them to a private school, home school, or even possibly move to Bossier Parish?  I am not interested in any of the above, but as a parent I will do what it takes for my child to get the education that he/she needs, and not have to worry about overcrowding or safety issues.

Jackson & McKenna having a snowball fight with their great-grandfather, Billy Puckett!

34/365

I love it when Northwood Hills forgets to turn their fountain off on really cold nights!

33/365

Anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

32/365

Well I obviously did not take this picture, but still feel that it counts towards my 365 project.  This is me and my cousin/friend, Jennifer Brummett, and our interpretation of "A Wine Glass" at Painting with a Twist!  We had such a great time!  Can't wait for our next outing!  :)

31/365

I heard some EXTREMELY loud, but cute giggling going on just before bed & came in to find some toddlers bouncing on their cows!  (P.S.  Did I mention I had a wicked migraine?  Even so, the giggling was almost contagious!!!)

30/365

Today McKenna decided that it was Snow White's 5th birthday and that she & Jackson were going to throw her a surprise party.  She, of course, had to dress the part!  She had soooo much fun "setting up" for the party.  At one point she felt that Jackson was not pulling his weight & came to me and said, "Momma, Jackson isn't doing what I want him to do so can you just give me another kid to work with?"!!  She kills me!  While the prep work was being done I was asked to "entertain" Snow White so she wouldn't know what was going on.  Then when the big moment came....we all (Jack, Kenna & me) turned off McKenna's bedroom light, piled up in her princess tent in her room and when McKenna gave us the "signal", we yelled.....SURPRISE SNOW WHITE!!!!  We sang, we "ate", we "drank", we danced, and even hit a pinata to get candy!!   It was super fun!!!  The joy on McKenna's face during the whole thing was PRICELESS!!!  She even slept WITH and AS Snow White!

29/365

Today Jackson did not feel, well so we stayed home from church and cuddled on the couch for the better part of the day.  You can see in his eyes that he's like "ok I don't feel very good but I'm trying to smile to make my momma happy".  He was such a trooper ALL day and had made almost a complete recovery by days end!  And doesn't he look spiffy in his new conductor hat?!?  His Paw McCoy would be so proud!! He was a retired KCS man.

28/365

My little man flying his airplane all over Papa & Nana's living room.  He kept telling me he was flying to GRIME (Guam) "just like my daddy".  (FYI...Ben is in Las Vegas right now, not Guam.  But the kids think any time he is away for work that he is in Guam.)

27/365

My niece, Hallie Rae Moore, helping herself to my lemon at IHOP!  She actually loved it and even went back for more & more!  (Notice her manicure!  Too sweet!)

26/365

McKenna put this puzzle together ALL BY HERSELF!!!

25/365

Jackson showing off his monkey puppet he named "Jackson" that he made at preschool.  You cannot see it but he also has a tail that Jackson (the boy, not the monkey) was very proud of.  Also, if you look closely at his shirt there is a bulldog, which is Jackson's nickname.  It was given to him by my BFF Jana when he was about 12 months old!

This is what is left of Caddo Fire District Number One (on Old Moorsingsport Road near Donnie Bickham Middle School).  It caught on fire Fall 2010 and was "totalled".  It is now being torn down so that a new station can be built.  It was very sad to see it being torn down because from the outside it had not looked that badly damaged.  But as I understand it, there was enormous smoke damage to the interior   :(

23/365

This is a picture of my church, First Baptist Church of Blanchard.  The older I get the more important it becomes to me and my family.  It is a HUGE part of my life; and becoming even bigger!  We go on Sundays to Sunday school & church.  My parents go there as well and my dad plays the guitar with the choir.  I have an aunt & uncle that attend; as well as my BFF & a niece.  My kids also go to half day preschool there Monday through Friday and they LOVE it!  They are actually sad on Saturdays and sometimes cry when I tell them that school is closed.  So all we need to do is find something to do there on Saturdays and our entire week would be TOTALLY COVERED!!!    :)

Snow White has made a full recovery from her ear infection!

16/365

This is a NIGHTMARE for the mother of toddlers.  This means at least 24 hours of in door activities!  There are only so many games of memory & go fish a parent can play!  : )

15/365

McKenna, oh I mean "Snow White", watching a little TV while she recovers from her 1st ever ear infection :(

14/365

Jackson LOVES to dress himself now!  He can even button his own PJ's!  I have time to do a load of laundry while he is doing the buttoning, but at least he is trying - just kidding, sort of!  (Which is more than I can say for his big sister!  haha)

13/365

Took Jackson & McKenna for their gymnastics lesson today and snuck into take some photos.  And one photo for today just would not do!  This was their favorite move of the day....its called "dirty feet"!  They couldn't wait to get home and practice!  Daddy came to watch; and while he was a bit apprehensive of Jackson participating, now that he's seen how much fun he is having and that he's not doing pliets or the splits, he's all good!  : )

12/365

This is Jackson, 3 yrs, watching TV just after his nap.  He is wearing his FAVORITE outfit!  His cousin Eban (Evan) gave it to him for his birthday.  When he put it on this morning he said, "Ohhh..mommy!  Eban's mommy gave this to me for my birthday!  It has a hat!  It's soooo soft!."  He's worn the outfit several times and has said the EXACT SAME THING each time!  OH...and try to take that hoodie off of him while indoors....no way!  Ha ha!

Chloe ~HAD~ to be buckled in before we pulled out of the driveway one day!  SAFETY FIRST!!!
(FYI...this was taken with my iPhone vs my "real camera"...so no judgement on the quality please...lol)

7/365

Night time snack ~BEN POOLE STYLE~

6/365

McKenna & Jackson helping Papa with his fire in the backyard...they are such "big helpers"!

5/365

What can I say?  Hmmm...it was a slow day in the life of an amateur photographer!  A little blurry, yes; but don't you just have the overwhelming urge to jump on the top of that bad boy and give it a whirl?!?!

4/365

This is a house that I pass every day...at least twice...on the way out of and back into my neighborhood.  I LOVE THIS HOUSE!  It's like a mini-mansion!  Not too big, definitely not too small, just right!!!!  Seeing it every day makes me very happy and allows me to daydream....ahhh....maybe someday!!!!

3/365

We celebrated McKenna's 4th birthday by taking her to build-a-bear and letting her pick out whatever she wanted.  She chose a pink dog she named Chloe.  I almost DIED when I found twinkle toe Sketchers for Chloe that matched McKenna's EXACTLY!!!  McKenna was ~thrilled~!!!

2/365

McKenna sleeping soundly with Ashley (the unicorn) by her side!  Shhh.....zzzzzzz!

1/365

Nate & Ben on New Year's day....enjoying their last lunch together at O'Charley's on the way to take Nater back to GA  :(
